My clinical group and I distributed brochures regarding proper input and output documentation on R7 at Maine Medical Center. The effects of a simple reminder were impressive. We found that all healthcare workers that worked on, or visited this floor and reviewed the brochure were reminded of the importance of accurate fluid measurements for patients with cardiovascular illnesses. This lead to an increased awareness of tasks that seemed small, but were so important in the long run. From the feedback we received, we found that the brochures were overall successful in conveying our desired message, and all medical personnel on this floor showed an interest and inclination to better track I & O measurements.
I learned a lot throughout the completion of this project. In the past, I had considered intake and output measurements merely as an additional task CNAs and nurses were to complete. I now understand how beneficial proper measurements are for patients and their longterm health. I think that the healthcare professionals would view the execution of this project in a positive light, as it implies that my group members and I are aware of discrepancies in documentation, and are adamant about looking for a solution to these issues. It also shows our determination to quality improvement in the nursing practice and that we work well in collaboration and completion of a project.
While working as a team, I discovered that I can complete tasks assigned to me on time, and use others as resources to come up with ideas and use their judgement in any revisions that must be made to my work. I also learned that I am also capable of resuming the role of team leader. Though we worked together for a majority of the project, there were a few times in which a leader was necessary to facilitate the process and determine the final product. I was lucky to have a great group of students to work with for this project, and I am highly satisfied with the outcome.
