Helping Hands

The painting above is titled Helpful Hands. It was painted by artist, Wayne Pascall. From my perspective, this painting depicts one person helping another to the top of a mountain. I see this as a metaphor which compares the individual helping to the nurse, and the individual receiving help to their patient on their way to recovery. Each time a patient reaches the “top of the mountain”, a nurse has been successful in their endeavor of healing. I like this metaphor because each time a patient is discharged, I will think of them reaching the top of their mountain.

  1. This is a great metaphor to describe nursing. I also feel as though this painting shows that the nurse is helping their patient at their worst and bringing them back to stability. The artwork I choose shows that the beauty of people is on the inside. Being a helpful and caring person is beautiful. I focused more on the internal beauty of people and you focused more on the big picture of helping someone to recovery. Regardless, I think we can both agree that compassion is a beautiful thing.

  2. What a stunning painting and thanks for providing the credit. Certainly, every one of our patients has a mountain to climb to return to health and nurses lend the strength and encouragement to help them succeed in their endeavor. What a beautiful analogy to hold onto!

  3. This piece really demonstrates the patient and nurse relationship in a very symbolic way. In comparison to my piece, this illustration is very similar in that it conveys a tone of ‘working together’ and strength. As nurses we also have to remember that the patient is relying on us to support them when they are unable to support themselves during what may be one of the most difficult times of their lives.

  5. This is a great metaphor and I totally agree with everything you said! Our posts are similar in the fact that we emphasized how nurses are always there to help their patients in every way possible and lend a helping hand. You focused more on the individual’s recovery and them “reaching the top of their mountain” and how nurses are there to help them. Whereas I went in the direction of emphasizing the integration of science and technical skills in an artistic manner in order to deliver it to the patient effectively. This is definitely a way nurses help their patients on their way to recovery!

  6. Nice insight, I really like how you interpreted this painting. I really love the idea that when a patient is discharged they’re “reaching the top of their mountain”. That’s a great way of thinking and how everyone is helping each other to reach the top of their own mountain is a cool way of thinking about things. Great job!
